EPHEMERAL

Influenced by printmaking, the work in this series borrows images from many sources; my early sketchbooks of life room drawings, photographs of insects I've collected, and natural objects from my garden.  I layer and recycle these images in an informal vocabulary that weaves through the work.  Painting in thin oils on small wood panels, sometimes on top of printed images, I have found a greater clarity and control that allows me to investigate specific natural forms.  The compositions in my paintings are very simple, only a few objects are assembled.  I am interested in how they float in and out of perception, in the relationship between the layers.  I think of them as short poems connecting childhood memory with adult concerns. This body of work is called Ephemeral because so much of it describes things that are fleeting: dragonflies, blooms, ripe raspberries, fertility.  The seeds carry the potential for regeneration, but there are many obstacles.
