Field notes

This work follows my move from printmaking back to painting in oils.  Many of the pieces begin with a figure or texture printed onto the surface of the panel.  The image is built through accumulated layers, figures growing insubstantial under coats of glaze.  Focused on the passage of time, these paintings document moments of transition in the body and in nature.  A maple leaf, a bone, some pieces of straw float to the surface, their intense detail commanding attention.  Sometimes protective, sometimes signifying desire or mortality, these objects are markers guiding the viewer into the meditation of the painting.  Field notes from the natural world, they bind us to physical cycles, while the painting creates a space for the mind to wander.
